PARTS COMPOSING A COPPER PLATING SYSTEM

Your tank. Plating tanks are typically made of Polypropylene or other plastic resistant to acid, Polypropylene, PP, is common and often the same material kitchen cutting boards are made of.

.9999 The rectifier. Your power supply.

.9999 Rectifiers are engineered for any size plating tank. If you make beads or jewelry you may use a small power supply 1-5 volts. If you make industrial particle separators many square feet in area then you would need a larger rectifier on the order of 10,000 volts or more. Commercial platers may use enormous rectifiers and tanks with baths ranging to thousands of gallons. Electroforming equipment may be purchased new or used.

Anodes. These are the copper parts which are the source for

making your forms. These come in any size determined by the size of your tank. Anodes for copper acid baths are Phospherized Copper, and are sold by the pound. Anodes may require a fabric anode cover . These anode bags are made of a synthetic acid resistant material. The Anodes also require hooks which thread into them. This setup of Anode, bag and hook hangs from the + positive busbar that is called the anode bar.

A filter system is another central part of an electroforming

system. The filter removes any particles that may enter or break

down in the bath. The filters are also made of Dynel and last

quite a long time. If you are producing a lot of work. the anode bag and the filter will help maintain top performance from the bath.

Air circulator. A commercial plater could not do without one.

Yet , your very small 1-2 gallon plating system could

survive without one. When tanks are filled with work the air circulator (a.k.a. Sparger) helps to move the copper ions throughout the bath, which is critical for an even and consistent  plated surface. Depending on the size of your tank periodic stirring with a plastic paddle or plastic paint stirrer will duplicate this effect. A minute or two is adequate. Production work insists that a sparger is better.

The chemistry. Is the essence of the plating process. The bath is made up of copper sulphate, distilled or filtered water, hydrochloric and Sulphuric acid.
